Filmonik Presents: The 500lb Gorilla In the Room!

A FOUR-DAY GORILLA KinoKabaret Event

THURSDAY OCTOBER 17th – SUNDAY OCTOBER 20th @ MADLAB

SCREENING on SUNDAY OCTOBER 20th FROM 7.30PM @ ISLINGTON MILL

“Do well with nothing, do even better with a little and do it right now!”

This is the credo of Filmonik and the Kino Kabaret Movement, in which creativity, skill, passion and commitment are pushed to the limit and sheer love of filmmaking wins the day. And yet… during Kabaret we are blessed with such luxuries as hired-in equipment, a work space and a modicum of time. It’s all-too-easy to get complacent. In other words, it’s time, once again, to let the Filmonik Gorilla off the chain!

The concept is simple. It’s a back-to-basics, bare-bones mini-kabaret. No 24-hour lab; no kit or props beyond those you bring along yourself. We will have a meeting place, a base of operations, available during the day. That is all. We pool what resources we have, and the talent that goes with it, and we make films.

There will be a “pitching session” at 10.30am on Thursday 17th October, at MadLab. Here introductions will be made, skills shared, and collaborations forged. Participants will then have from the end of the meeting until show time to make a film for Sunday’s screening.

Part creative jam session, part cinematic bootcamp, the Kabaret is a flat out, pedal-to-the-metal guerrilla filmmaking event; a chance for filmmakers, writers, actors, musicians, artists and creatives of all types to come together in a spirit of creative collaboration, to put their inventiveness, ability to improvise and eye for an opportunity to the test, and above all to make movies. The last Kabaret spawned nearly 80 short films in seven days, from throwaway quickies to complex narrative dramas, from stop motion animations to experimental music videos. We want to maintain that record of wild creativity, and we are looking for people ready to rise to that challenge.

Whatever your skill or interest, the Kabaret has something to offer. For Directors, it’s a chance to hook up with actors, writers, cameramen and editors, for cameramen, sound techs and editors, it’s a chance to hone your skills in a high-pressure environment, pair up with directors, and start working as part of a filmmaking team. For writers, it’s a chance to workshop ideas with actors and get that script on screen. For musicians and composers, it’s a chance to try your hand at scoring a film, or performing on camera. For actors, it’s an opportunity to improvise and workshop characters and gain invaluable experience working with different types of directors and an array of varying dramatic roles. For every participant, it’s an opportunity to build up material for your show reels, to collaborate with new people, and network. Taking part in Kabaret films often leads to future projects and work outside of Filmonik. But you only get out of it what you put in – so get involved and push your talents to the max!

This is your chance to test your commitment to the medium you claim to love – to eat, drink, and breathe cinema. The only thing you won’t get to do is sleep.

Cost is just £5, which will cover access to the daytime base of operations, as well as to the screening.

The final screening will be open to all. Price on the door will be £5.

THIS EVENT IS ONLY OPEN TO PEOPLE AGED 18 AND OVER
