Stygian Arts

Title: Stygian Arts
Location: MadLab (Upstairs)
Description: Meeting of the new group “Stygian Arts”, an offshoot of the Manchester Gothic Lifestyles meetup group.
Start Time: 13:00
Date: 2010-05-09
End Time: 16:00

Stygian Arts, the artistic love-child of Manchester Gothic Lifestyles, presents a technological mismatch of epic proportions. This month’s meet-up will include an audio-visual talk on Photoshop CS2 photo-manipulation for the very beginner, alongside “Stitch & Bitch”, the Stygian knitting & sewing circle. Even if we’d tried to do it deliberately, could we have chosen technology that was further apart than a laptop, projector & image changing software versus a pair of sticks and some wool? Yet both are dark arts which produce sometimes unpredictable but brilliant results.
“Stitch & Bitch” are planning to demonstrate and talk about different knitting techniques that people might like to try. We have several “novice knitters” who are keen to improve their knowledge and skills, and some more experienced knitters who are willing to share their knowledge.
The Photoshop talk will depend partly on which elements of the program people are most interested in. It is likely to include a brief tour of the palettes, a look at the use of layers, some selection and cutting out techniques, and maybe some touch-up tools. This is not going to turn people into instant Photoshop wizards (which takes many hours & weeks of patient practice and several good books), but might give people a start on the road. If people are aware of the capabilities then they can make a considered judgement whether to invest in the software and go for it themselves. This will be presented by Manchester Gothic Lifestyles’ resident artist Arachne, who uses Photoshop as one of the tools of her art.
One caveat for both these talks: We are not professional & systematic educators, these talks are being given by enthusiastic people who are willing to share their hard-won skills with their friends. If you want a college course, go to college ;-)
This is not just for Goth / alternative folks – all welcome to join in, just bring a positive attitude and a sense of humour (and a small donation for the coffee kitty).
