Meetup #3 – An evening of tinkering
Our first two meetups have been amazing, lots of people at both and it’s great to see so many people based in Manchester who are passionate about developing projects based on Arduino. Previously we have had meetups which focus on a specific project/person, and whilst we think this format works, we also want to introduce periodical meetups where everyone can bring along their current work-in-progress project, share knowledge and tips, and ask/give advice to fellow tinkerers.
Our 3rd meetup will follow this relaxed, informal format. Bring your Arduino, shields, components, laptop or whatever you have and come and tinker on a Wednesday evening!
We’ll be bringing a GPS shield and a thermal printer, neither of which have made it out of their packaging yet!
We will also bring some fuel (crisps and nuts) and head for a tipple across the road at Common afterwards, for those who wish to join.
Hope to see you all on Wednesday!

Meetup #2 – Featuring Chris Ball, maker of homemade electronic instruments
Friday 7th December, MadLab

We’re delighted to announce that Manchester Arduino Meetup #2 will feature a talk from Chris Ball, a maker of homemade electronic instruments. Chris will be taking us through some of his projects and hopefully be bringing a couple down for us to have a play/look at.

He was recently at the Manchester Mini Maker Faire in July, where he was showcasing his work, namely a few MIDI input devices. You can find out more about Chris, including his pretty amazing laser harp, at his website http://chrisballprojects.wordpress.com.

We’re also going to trial a new format, as suggested by many people at the last meetup, including a roundup of the latest Arduino news and cool projects we’ve seen since the last meetup. If you have any links send them through and we’ll include them.

A round of free drinks (beer or a soft drink) is also available at Common after the meetup, for those who wish to carry on into the night!

A rough schedule for the evening is as follows:

6:30 – Arrival
7:00 – Arduino news and cool projects
7:30 – Chris Ball
8:00 – Q&A
8:30 – Final words
9:00 – Beverages at Common

Please RSVP so we have an idea of numbers

@Arduino_Mcr is an opportunity to regularly meet the rapidly growing Manchester Arduino community to share ideas, advice, stories and prototypes with one another over a few beverages.
If you have a prototype or project that you’ve been working on, drop us a quick message. It would be fantastic if people could bring along their Arduino based projects to show and discuss them. Please do get involved in any way you can and let’s bring together the Manchester based Arduino community.

Who’s who, beverages and face tracking devices

The first meetup will focus on getting to know each other over a couple of beverages and help shape the future of the group by agreeing on how regular the group should meet and content of the sessions (show and tell style, series of speakers, hackathon, group projects etc).

I’ll bring a couple of Arduino based projects that i’ve been tinkering with, show them working (hopefully) and be open to feedback, hacks and modifications! The first, a face recognition and tracking device (https://vimeo.com/22797787) that follows your face around the room. The second, a by product from my dissertation, essentially a context-aware RFID door entry system (https://vimeo.com/38290875).

Please do feel free to bring your latest Arduino project to show to us all. It’s always interesting in what other Manchester folk are creating!

The meetup is very much open to anyone who actively uses the Arduino platform or anyone who is thinking about tinkering with one. From absolute beginners to über geek status, all are welcome.

Follow the group on Twitter and RSVP to keep up to date. Oh, did I mention the first round of beverages is on me since it’s the fist meetup? :)

This event is sponsored by the BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT.
