The next Open Data Manchester is a special event tying in with FutureEverything taking place from the 19th – 24th March.

An Open Data Future is an open debate that aims to look under the hood of the open data movement.

Over the past few years open government data has evolved from a niche concern to one that has been embraced by national government, European Commission and other states and organisations around the globe.

It has been advocated that Open Government Data will expose the inner workings of state institutions and thus enable an environment for greater understanding, accountability and efficiency.

The release of open government data has also been seen as an opportunity to add value to national economies through the creation of new services, new intelligence and a more networked economy through the free flow of data.

But ultimately what are the drivers behind this movement, who are the winners and losers and what should a society based upon open practices look like?

Post FutureEverything

It’s been wonderful to be part of FutureEverything, the award winning global festival of art, music and ideas.

We presented a session about DIYBIO (a Wellcome Trust funded project with MMU), showed off some interactive installations at Victoria Bath‘s Handmade Digital DIY event (which saw us land on the front page of the BBC news website) – if you missed it, here’s a little film, and held an artist salon about the “wider implications of software culture” on Sunday.

We loved being a part of this festival, and can’t wait for next year!

The “Listening to Firefox” discussion event on Sunday 15th of May aimed to open up a space for new discussions specifically related to social, political and economic aspects of creative practices which embrace and include technology – all under the banner “Wider Implications of Software Culture.” It was also an experiment in hosting a different kind of dialogue across the various groups and practices which meet at MadLab in Manchester.
