Girl Geek Afternoon Tea

Girl Geek Afternoon Tea

Title: Girl Geek Afternoon Tea – Web Development Workshop
Location: MadLab
Description: Girl Geek Dinner has got a little sister – Girl Geek Afternoon Tea!
Start Time: 14:00
Date: 2010-04-25
End Time: 16:30

Who:
Girl Geeks, bring along anyone you like! Your friends, sisters, mums, cousins, daughters, colleagues… who might be interested in doing some techy stuff… Even boys can come if you want to bring them as your date! (But please register everyone so we know how many people we can expect :)
What:
Fancy getting an insight into the basics of web development? Make your first steps with HTML and CSS to get you started with building your own website and blog templates? Learn to love pointy brackets and hex colour codes? Look no further!
At the Girl Geek Afternoon Tea workshop, you will have the chance to learn some basic HTML/CSS skills and get some practice by putting together a small web page. Don’t worry if you’ve never done this before, we’ll have an introduction to get you started and experienced girl geeks to help out with questions and problems!
As always, the workshop will be very much hands on and more of a taster than a serious training programme – it’s about the fun, meeting people… and of course, tea and biscuits!
Bring along…?
Your laptop! (We won’t have any other PCs there, so you really need a laptop for the workshop)
Your favourite mug!
Your favourite biscuits, cupcakes, tea, coffee (we’ll have the basics, but in case you fancy something slightly more interesting… :)
Your friends, sisters, mums, cousins, daughters, colleagues… who might be interested in doing some techy stuff.
The event is completely free to attend and there will be no charges for parts etc – however, MadLab would be very happy to get a few donations (for the official MadLab donation cat) to keep the space running!

Girl Geeks, bring along anyone you like! Your friends, sisters, mums, cousins, daughters, colleagues… who might be interested in doing some techy stuff… Even boys can come if you want to bring them as your date! (But please register everyone so we know how many people we can expect :)

What:
Back in the days, when computer were BIG GREY BOXES and not those tiny shiny laptops we all use today, getting a new machine meant WORK. Real, honest, proper work, with screwdrivers, cables, dust, and sharp metal edges. Oh yes.
If you’ve always wondered what a computer looked like from the inside, and how you could stick the bits together to build something that’s more than the sum of its parts – look no further!

At the Girl Geek Afternoon Tea Computer Surgery Workshop, we’re going to drop a ton (literally…perhaps) of spare parts onto you and then it will be your turn to get your hands dirty and build a shiny new machine. Once the parts are in the right place, we’ll install an open source operating system (hello, Linux!) on the machines and see if everything works. The computers will be donated to MadLab (and possibly Arcspace, a community project in Hulme).
Don’t worry if you’ve never done this before, we’ll have an introduction to get you started, experienced girl geeks that help you build the tower of power, plenty of screwdrivers and, of course, tea and biscuits!

Bring along…?
- Your favourite mug
- Your favourite biscuits, cupcakes, tea, coffee (we’ll have the basics, but in case you fancy something slightly more interesting… :)
- Your friends, sisters, mums, cousins, daughters, colleagues… who might be interested in doing some techy stuff

Who: Girl Geeks, bring along anyone you like! Your friends, sisters, mums, cousins, daughters, colleagues… who might be interested in doing some techy stuff… Even boys can come if you want to bring them as your date (boys, now is the time to start being extra nice to your favourite girl geek… chocolates might not go down well at this time of year, how about a bunch of brightly coloured LEDs?)

What: As well as the nattering, knitting and cake munching, we’ve got an awesome workshop.

Melanie (of cyberspice.org.uk) will bring along some Arduinos and (quote) “loads of LEDs and other sensors to play with” so we can start building and coding up some fun stuff.

Ladies, this is your chance to get your hands dirty with some open source hardware and put together something cool (I’m thinking crazy Wallace & Gromit style tea temperature measuring machines ;) )! Don’t worry if you’ve never heard of Arduinos and/or if you don’t have mad coding skills – we’ll work in teams so everyone can do / watch / learn as much as they want to.

And, of course – there will be tea & biscuits (we’ll try not to get too many crumbs in our laptops…).

Bring along…?

- YOUR LAPTOP for the Arduino software.

- Your favourite mug

- Your favourite biscuits, tea, coffee (we’ll have the basics, but in case you fancy something slightly more interesting… :)

- Your friends, sisters, mums, cousins, daughters, colleagues… who might be interested in doing some techy stuff

If this sounds good to you, clicketyclick our eventbrite page and sign up (it’s all free of course!).

PS: And what about the boys? Feel free to come along as your girl geek friend’s “date”! :)

Thanks again to Madlab for letting us use their space & giant teapot!

First Girl Geek Afternoon Tea

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Girl Geek Dinner, a world wide celebration of women in science, technology, and anything else has a little sister, Girl Geek Afternoon Tea. Madlab was honored to host the birth of this new group, a idea hatched by @bunmagazine at last Manchester Girl Geek Dinner.  As a new group, the first event was held around introductions and a bit of show and tell. A common thread throughout the discussions were love of shiny things and the “glass ceiling”.

Tea & Sympathy

Talks were held over tea, coffee, and delicious home made cinnamon buns by @cookclever

We had ladies from computing science, programmers, developers, and a few crafters interested in Arduinos and quilting.

Next month’s Tea we will hold a workshop, perhaps around Ardunios, as we had a good introductory by @cyberspice

A mailing list will soon be created.

More pictures of the event can be seen here.

Girl Geek Afternoon Tea

Title: Girl Geek Afternoon Tea
Location: Madlab
Description: What could be better on a Sunday afternoon than a nice cup of tea, yummy biscuits, a good chat and… GEEKERY! Yes Ladies, the Girl Geek Dinner has got a little sister – Girl Geek Afternoon Tea!
Start Time: 14:00
Date: 2009-12-06
End Time: 16:00

Similar to the good ol’ GG Dinner, but held on a family friendly Sunday afternoon. This is your chance to have a cup of tea and a geeky chat, meet new people, hear some interesting talks and take part in fun tech related workshops for all skills levels (there may be snorkels, screwdrivers and partitioning tools involved…maybe.)

The first Afternoon Tea will be a Show & Tell – so bring something really cool and fun that you would like to show to others. This could be anything, from ancient knitting techniques to mad hacking skills – no need to prepare formal slides, a few of minutes of live action will do!

What you will need to bring:

We’re going to keep it rather informal, so pop in and bring
- your favourite mug (spare teapots / cafetieres would be helpful, too)
- your favourite tea or coffee (we’ll have proper “tea” tea, milk and sugar, but if you prefer something more fancy… :)
- BYOB – bring your own biscuits to share with your fellow girl geeks (rumour has it we’ll have cake…oooh!)

And, last but certainly not least – bring someone along who wouldn’t normally come to a Girl Geek Dinner! Any friends, colleagues, junior girl geeks, sisters, mums,… are welcome!

To give us an idea of the number of people we can expect, we would ask you to sign up if you’re planning on coming:
http://girlgeektea.eventbrite.com/
Spontaneous visitors are always welcome anyway, of course!

Any questions? Just post to the list at mancggd@googlegroups.com!

PS:  And what about men? Same rules as for the GG Dinners apply – if you’ve got a girl geek as a date, you’re welcome! :)
