Manchester Girl Geeks presents an introduction to Wikipedia, aiming to shift the balance by encouraging more women to participate as editors. The event promises to be a tea and cake packed day with scouting and editing galore.

Helpers from Wikimedia UK and Manchester Girl Geeks will show you how to take your first steps as a Wikipedia contributor, and can provide more advanced help to those who’ve already dabbled. Bring along your favourite sources and add to the body of knowledge together.

The editing day will include separate areas for beginners and people who already know how to edit Wikipedia – if you attended our event last year, or you already have experience of editing, there’ll be a more advanced area where you can get on with editing, and have help on more advanced topics. If you’re not experienced, trainers will take you through the basics of logging in and editing, as well as give you some ideas of how to contribute.

Manchester Girl Geeks celebrate the Code Year 2012
- with an intro to coding!

With the help of www.codecademy.com, our very own girl geek Kat (aka @binarykitten) will walk and talk you through the first steps to writing your own code (in JavaScript, to be precise). This short intro class is aimed at absolute beginners, who have little or no knowledge of programming, as well as people who would like to refresh their coding skills. Children from age 10 and older who know how to use a computer are more than welcome, too! Feel free to bring your young ones and share a laptop with them.

The class will be around 2 hours with plenty of explanations of what and why you are coding. And as always, there will breaks for tea, biscuits and chats with other girl geeks and soon-to-be geeks!

Tickets
We only have limited spaces for this event. In order to make sure that everyone who wants to come gets a ticket, we charge our usual £2 booking fee for this event. We will provide some tea & biscuits, but we would like to point out that our venue – MadLab – appreciates donations. Look out for the donation cat :)

Manchester Science Festival 2011 Round Up

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

Microbiology and Art Exhibition PreviewIt’s been another great Manchester Science Festival this year, and MadLab has been lucky to host 6 events. We kicked off with a preview of Microbiology & Art, an exhibition of work inspired by microbiology, ran our 3rd Robot Hackday, celebrated Alan Turing, held the first ever DIYBIO UK Summit, and rounded off with a Science Jamboree and tea party with Teawitter.
We’ve had a full 9 days holding various science related activities, all with a MadLab twist.

Over the festival period we’ve had over 200 people come through our doors hacking robots from old toys, discussing short stories from modern science, getting to know the global DIYBIO community, eat cake, make instant ice cream all with a generous dose of practical workshops.

Manchester Girl Geek Tea Party : Mathematical Origami

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

This month’s tea party was an exciting workshop based around some different mathematical objects which can be made with origami. Dr Nicolette Rattenbury of the School of Computing, Mathematics and Digital Technology at Manchester Metropolitan University was leading the workshop, and it was obviously a very popular theme, since the workshop was very well attended. We had a full house, and every table was packed with girl geeks ranging from kids up to big kids, eager to have a go at making things out of paper.
