The rules: no female, no entry

Girl Geek events are for the ladies! But it doesn’t mean that men can’t attend, they just have to come as the guest of a female.

  • If you are male and wish to attend the event then you will need to be invited by a female attending the event.
  • Girls, one date only please! (We want to keep the numbers balanced!)
  • The best way around these rules if you’re a guy who wants to attend? Convince or bribe someone to let you be their date for the dinner.

Come to the nextManchester Girl Geeks Tea Party and share your knowledge with girls (and guys) who want to know more. We’re having a Girl Geek “Show and Tell” and you’re invited to come along, learn something new and teach us about the things you find fascinating.

Science, Engineering or Technology – wherever your interest lies, you’re welcome to talk for up to ten minutes (or less if you’d rather) on a subject of your choice. If you don’t have anything to share then just come along for the technology, a cup of tea and some cake. Feel free to bring some homemade cakes if you want to share the love, too.

There’ll be a relaxed atmosphere where you can share your thoughts and ideas with like minded ladies. If you’re new to technology and just want to learn more, then come to listen and meet some great people.

This event is free and we will provice some tea & biscuits, but we would like to point out that our venue – MadLab – appreciates donations. Look out for the donation cat :)

What to bring along?

  • A short talk or presentation
  • A laptop could be useful with working wifi, we might have some web based show-and-tells
  • Your favourite mug
  • Your favourite biscuits, cupcakes, tea, coffee (we’ll have the basics, but in case you fancy something slightly more interesting… :)
  • Your friends, sisters, mums, cousins, daughters, colleagues… who might be interested in doing some techy stuff.
  • On the day the first 15 minutes will be set aside for tea, biscuits & booking your time slot. There’ll be a list of slots available when you arrive and we’ll allocate them on a first come first serve basis.

    Girl Geeks do Astrophysics!

At the 9th Manchester Girl Geek Tea Party, we will return to MadLab to have an exciting talk by a woman scientist, followed by a discussion – and, as always, tea and cake.

To Catch A Neutrino – A talk by physicist Dr Marieke Navin

Neutrinos are the most enigmatic and elusive of particles. They can transmit information from the furthest reaches of space and it is this unlikeliness to interact that makes them so interesting to study. Marieke will give you a whistle stop tour of the world of neutrino astronomy then bring you back to Earth to man-made neutrino beams and why we are firing them through the Earth, across Japan and why the study of neutrinos will help us solve some of the mysteries of the Universe.

Marieke Navin took 3 years out after doing an MPhys in Physics and Astronomy at the University of Sheffield. In this time she travelled, volunteered and worked as a debt collector. Marieke returned to Sheffield and has recently completed a PhD on the neutrino oscillation experiment T2K in Japan. She spent 6 weeks working down a mine in the Japanese Alps refurbishing part of the detector. Marieke was runner up in the 2007 FameLab competition and now works as Science Communication Officer at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester.
