This month we’re back with a vengeance and the subject will be “Ad-hoc Data Workflows with Google Apps Script”.

Google Apps Script is becoming more and more powerful, and more and more useful, as the list of APIs available increases on a regular basis.

DJ Adams will be giving a presentation on real world uses of Apps Script in the area of monitoring, demoing a live example of using the Gmail and Spreadsheet services to build a loosely coupled data collection, parsing and graphing mechanism for system loads stats.

Find out how data is sent to Gmail, organised with labels, processed with Apps Script using the Gmail API, and written to a spreadsheet, all in the background. Once it’s in a spreadsheet, the graphing is a piece of cake!

See you there!

Well folks, Google I/O 2011 has been and gone and what a fantastic event it was. What’s more – and even better – is that all the sessions are available online. From Developer Tools to Android, from App Engine to Google Apps Scripting, from APIs to GWT, there is something for everyone.

This month’s meetup, on Monday 6th June, is to reflect on the sessions, and share thoughts and ideas as to what the next 12 months will hold. The projector should be available for us to watch one of the sessions online. Then we’ll retire to a local drinking establishment (Common, Mini-Marble, etc) to discuss further.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Hello all

The next meeting of the Manchester Google Technology User Group will take place on Monday 7th March, at the usual place (here at MadLab!) and at the usual time (7pm). DJ Adams is giving a talk on Gmail Contextual Gadgets. Here’s a bit of blurb on what these gadgets are from http://code.google.com/apis/gmail/gadgets/contextual/:

“A Gmail contextual gadget is a gadget that is triggered by clues in Gmail, such as the contents of Subject lines and email messages. For example, Gmail already provides a YouTube contextual gadget. If the body of an email contains a link to a YouTube video, a clickable thumbnail view of the video appears at the bottom of the email.”

You can not only build read-only gadgets, but also build gadgets that have forms and user interaction, thus extending the use and context of a received email, and build out your apps platform to provide all sorts of workflow possibilities.

Come along to chat about all things Google tech, and learn more about these fascinating bits of technology.
