Manchester Raspberry Jam

Title: Manchester Raspberry Jam 7
Location: MadLab
Description: The Raspberry Pi is a credit card sized computer with an ARM chip that runs Linux and you can buy one for about £30. It’s designed to bring the hype of BBC Basic back in to schools – you just plug one in to a TV or monitor, attach a keyboard and mouse, and start programming!
Date: 09-12-2012
Start Time: 10:00
End Time: 15:00
Register: This event has has passed. The upcoming event can be found here

Come along and bring your Raspberry Pi to life! Share ideas and see talks and demos on what the people of the North West are doing with their £30 credit card sized computers…

Talks and demos are welcomed and encouraged.

This event is suitable for anyone – professional or novice, adult or child – you don’t need any prior knowledge or experience.

The format of the event is simply hacking on whatever you want – get together with someone and see what you can make the Pi do. Some people make games with Scratch, others spend time learning Python, some play with the GPIO pins and external hardware, others teach or help people get started. Apart from an introductory presentation by the organiser, there is very little schedule to the day. However we encourage people to speak up if they have something they want help with so that everyone gets something out of the day. All day long demos will be going on which amaze the group.

Whether you’re a beginner or an expert you’ll have a blast playing with this incredible single board computer.

What you’ll need:

- Bring a Pi if you have one, but it’s not essential everyone does
- Bring as many connectivity cables as you can, as well as mice/keyboards and usb hubs – these all come in handy!
- If convenient (i.e. you live close or drive) do bring a monitor so more many people can get on at once
We provide food (in the form of pizza) and drink as this is an all day event – this is kindly provided by our sponsors. If you would like to help with sponsorship please get in touch

Sponsorship donations go towards food and all proceeds go to the MadLab’s running costs!

Raspberry Pi and the Raspberry Jam

Monday, June 11th, 2012

Yesterday I had the privilege of attending Manchester’s first Raspberry Pi event, called (what else?) theRaspberry Jam, hosted by Madlab. It turned out to be a great day, and I’m glad everyone braved the rain to make it.

I’d received my own Raspberry Pi a few days ago, and hadn’t had much chance to really get to grips with it. It attracted a lot of attention in the studio, word spread around that a few of us had received our boards and from that point onward we had a steady stream of nerds coming over to fawn over them for the rest of the day. It’s not hard to see why: they’re strikingly small, to the point where it’s hard to believe these tiny things are usable computers (“where’s the rest of it?” came up a few times). (more…)

Talks and demos are welcomed and encouraged.

The format of the event will be in the style of an ‘unconference’ – with talks, demos, tutorials and workshops going on throughout the day – put on by willing participants – and everyone has the freedom to attend the sessions or simply plug in their Pi and have a play with it or group up with others and share ideas. We’re looking for some sponsorship money from supporters so we can lay on some food for attendees.
