Game Jam February 2013 review

Wednesday, March 6th, 2013

Another month, another quick-fire game jam in Manchester!

This time we were jamming around the theme of TRAPS, and as usual everyone really pulled it out of the bag and made some amazing games.

We made, among other things: banana controllers, trapped treasure chests, magnet tanks, play-doh buttons, puns, monks, text adventures with Bruce Willis, Makey Makey hacks, laser typing challenges, and a game that got Chris running around Madlab (again).

This was my last chance to jam for a while due to the imminent baby arrival, so a giant personal thanks to everyone for making it a good ‘un! (The jam will carry on running without me, in the capable hands of some of our regulars, including hopefully the full Ludum Dare weekend in April. Keep an eye on Twitter for updates!)

MCR GameJam

Title: GameJam
Location: MadLab
Date: 12-01-2013
Start Time: 10:00
End Time: 17:00
Booking: register here

Are you a coder, artist or audio designer interested in videogame design? Or, are you a gamer who’s curious about how videogames are put together? If so, we’d like to invite you to come join us at Madlab for the fourth Manchester Game Jam!

Once again we’re throwing a rapid-fire one-day jam, open to anyone and everyone interested in all things game. Like last time, we’ll announce the theme a few days before the event so everyone has a bit of notice to plan stuff out (or, just turn up and wing it!). Solo and groups are both A-OK, and it doesn’t even have to be a videogame: if board games or anything else is more your bag, that’s cool too. Our only rule is: you have to show your game off at the end!

For more info, drop us an email: MCRgamejam@gmail.com
or, you can follow us on Twitter: @MCRgamejam

Here’s how our last few jams went down:

FAQ:

I’m not a programmer, will I be any use at the jam?
Absolutely! We’re encouraging a really diverse group of people: artists, designers, audio people and everyone in between. Most of our games are videogames, but in the past we’ve had board games and all sorts pop up. Go nuts!

What are the rules?
Rules? Pah! No rules for us. We’ll announce a theme beforehand, but apart from that you can do what you like. Our only request is that at the end of the jam you show everyone what you’ve been working on.

Is there a winner?
Nah. We’re in it for the games, the learning, and the fun. Let’s be honest: you’re all winners at our jam.

Do I need to bring a computer?
If you’re making a digital/computer game, then yes please: we don’t have any machines. We usually have some other fun stuff happening (board games, pervasive gaming), but generally most folks will be making videogames. There’s high-speed WiFi and lots of plug sockets, but you’ll need your own machine.

Who owns the games that get made?
You do! We usually share the finished games online, and we’re encouraging people to share their code too: looking at how people have built stuff is all part of the fun. Ownership of anything goes to the creator of the game, but sharing is caring, right?

Can I participate remotely?
For this event, no. It’s a hands-on, group event. Join us!

I don’t have a ticket, can I come anyway?
If we’re not sold out, you can pay on the door. Check the Eventbrite link on this page, or give us a shout!

I have a ticket, but now I can’t make it. What do I do?
Please let us know, so we can refund you and give someone else your ticket. Demand was high, so we don’t want to waste any tickets!

Description:

The Manchester Game Jam is pleased to announce our November jam, which will be the first of our new shorter monthly events. We’ll be back at the ever-awesome Madlab in Manchester’s northern quarter.

This jam is a bit different to the weekend ones we’ve done previously: there’ll be a single massive theme for the day that we’ll announce a few days beforehand (so you guys have a bit of thinking time). As always you can use any language/technology, groups or solo efforts are both A-OK, and if you’re making a none-digital game then that’s fine too (in fact, we encourage it). We do have one rule though: at the end of the jam day you have to present what you’ve made, successful or not!

Disclaimer: as this is a very intense short jam, we (politely) suggest that beginners avoid this event and come join us for the weekend jam in December instead, where there’s more time for newbies to learn the ropes a bit. As soon as the Ludum Dare guys decide on a date we’ll put the word out.

So yes, jam #3 is go! Tickets will be on sale shortly, they’ll be about a fiver to cover venue costs. We’re not covering food to keep costs down, but there’s lots of nice eateries/drinkeries in the Northern Quarter.
