Description: is a not-for-profit group which organises networking events, talks and hands-on workshops for women and girls with an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
While our events are aimed at girls and women of all ages, we are happy to welcome boys and men, especially if they come with a girl geek. Please note that children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

For this month’s tea party, we’ll be playing tabletop games! Strategy games, dice games, board games, and card games – from the fantastical to the wordy to the mathematical, and every shade of geeky in between. We’ll have a selection of board games for you to play, but you’re also welcome to bring your own that you’d like to share!

We’ll also have a short intro from game theory expert Sara Krenicky, who’s going to talk about game theory and how mathematics can be used to give yourself the advantage…

As always, there’ll be tea and cakes, and if you feel in a baking mood we’d love you to bring anything you’ve made. Maybe some dice-shaped mini cakes, or Scrabble tile biscuits!

Hope to see you there – and bring your friends!

Do you have a passion for technology? What gadget could you not live without? What wonder of science do you think the world should know about? Come to the next Manchester Girl Geek Tea Party and share your knowledge with girls (and guys) who want to know more.

We’re having another of our famous Girl Geek Show and Tell tea parties, and you’re invited to come along, learn something new and teach us about the things you find fascinating. Science, engineering, technology, maths, or anything geeky – wherever your interest lies, you’re welcome to talk for 10-15 minutes (or less if you’d rather) on a subject of your choice.

If you don’t have anything to share then just come along for the talks, a cup of tea and some cake. Feel free to bring some homemade cakes if you want to share the love, too. There’ll be a relaxed atmosphere where you can share your thoughts and ideas with like minded ladies. If you’re new and just want to learn more, then come to listen and meet some great people.

Tickets
This event is free, including tea and cakes/biscuits – although donations to our lovely hosts MadLab are very welcome.

What To Bring
A short talk/presentation (optional) plus laptop/slides if needed (remember it’s only 10-15 minutes!)
Your favourite mug
Your delicious baked goods, if you’re in a baking mood
Your friends, sisters, mums, cousins, daughters, colleagues, etc who might be interested in joining us!

On the day the first 15 minutes will be set aside for tea, biscuits & booking your time slot. There’ll be a list of slots available when you arrive and we’ll allocate them on a first come first serve basis. We look forward to seeing you there!

Those of you who remember our Women in Science Fair from last year will know all about Delia Derbyshire, the female musician who recorded the original Doctor Who theme and was a huge influence on modern electronic music. Inspired by Delia and female musicians in general, this January we’ll be hosting a musical extravaganza! The afternoon will feature a selection of musical/geeky guests, including:

  • Naomi Kashiwagi, representing Delia Derbyshire day, who’ll be telling us about their event and work
  • Electronic musician Lisa, who’ll be demonstrating her equipment and showing us how to loop samples
  • Composer Emily Howard, who uses mathematics to compose classical works
  • Geek songstress Helen Arney, singing some of her lovely science songs

In honour of this musical event, we’ve put together a Spotify playlist of some of our favourite female musicians – the playlist can be accessed and added to here, so whether you’re coming or not, feel free to contribute your own suggestions for our background music at the event. If you’re not Spotify-enabled, please email your suggestions to us.

As always, there’ll be tea and coffee, plus biscuits and cakes (feel free to bring your own if you’re in a bakey mood!) and the standard good Girl Geek company. Come along, meet our speakers, bring your favourite mug, and chase away those post-holiday winter blues with an afternoon of nerdy tunes.

To sign up for the event, tickets cost £2 (including drinks & cake!) and are available here: http://mancggtp29.eventbrite.co.uk/

Geeky crafty decorations!

Thinking about sprucing up your house for the holidays? Forget the usual decorations – why not try some geeky alternatives? Whether it’s hanging on a Christmas tree, or just decorating your house to make it look pretty during the cold winter months, surely a Mario 1up mushroom beats a boring snowman every time. We’ll have a selection of different crafty items to be made, from all kinds of materials, and full instructions will be provided. Ticket cost (£6) will include the cost of all your materials and you’ll get to take home everything you make.

Among other things, we’ll be making LED-fitted hanging ornaments, much like our LED badges from previous workshops, and we’ll also have some Hama beads, for anyone who enjoyed our Hama bead workshop earlier in the year, to make some hanging festive sprites. We’ll also be making things from recycled materials, all with a great techy-sciencey-nerdy theme.

Of course, there’ll be our usual tea, coffee and cake, so if you feel the need to bring any thematically appropriate baked goods along, that is as always much appreciated.

Tickets: £6 (including materials, so you can take your finished items home!)
