Twice Removed Exhibition

Twice Removed

Title: Twice Removed
Location: MadLab
Description: Twice Removed is an exhibition of experimental new project by photography collective ‘A Family Of…’
Start Date: 2011-08-12
Start Time: 11:00
End Date: 2011-09-03
End Time: 17:00
Exhibition is not open on Sunday

The broad themes of the project are ‘connection’ and ‘relationship’. Our working method for this exhibition reflects our collaborative approach:  each member of the group producing a series of visual starting points, the project has evolved by each person visually responding to any of these to make work that creates a dialogue with each others work. As the project develops the images will make connections with other images, not just through common themes and visual styles, but also through collisions and provocations.

Twice Removed

An experimental publication will be linked to the exhibition: the starting point will be an A2 colour poster, each side printed with a selection of images from the project. With the introduction of a cut, or a variety of cuts and folds, the poster can be turned in to a ‘maze’ book, with pages. Each different combination of cut and fold will result in a different book, with a different sequence of images. As each book will generate a different narrative, new connections and themes will become evident in the work.

About ‘A Family Of…’

The nature of ‘A Family Of…”is to produce work as a true collective. There will be no individual authorship of work:- all images are a product of the collaboration, working in this way raises questions and challenges ideas around re-appropriation, copyright and the nature of collaborative work. The exhibition will lead viewers to detect and investigate group and individual concerns, themes and visual approaches.

Undiscovered

Friday, January 28th, 2011

A great start to the new year, and the newly-energised Undiscovered group. Ian Simpson from Slaughterhouse Studios came along and gave a talk, ostensibly on the theme of “DSLRs for beginners” but actually covering some really useful general tips on equipment, composition and inspiration, as well as technical tips for DSLR users.

Location: MadLab
Description: New group for photography lovers.
Start Time: 19:00
Date: 2011-01-13
End Time: 21:00

Welcome to the all-new home for Undiscovered. Don’t worry, the Flickr albums and group still exist to show off our work and to talk all things photography, but we thought we needed more of a “shop front” to show ourselves off and talk about what we do, so here it is.

Here’s the programme for a refreshed Undiscovered in the first quarter of 2011. We’re going to split each session between an activity/demo/talk and then the regular, themed “show-and-tell”. Once we’re up and running again we’ll open up an area of the Flickr discussion group for you to suggest future themes. Also, keep an eye out early in the year for news of a Summer Exhibition!

January (Thursday 13th)

  • Talk: DSLRs for beginners
  • Show-&-Tell: “Winter Colours”

TALK:

The DSLR for beginners talk will be given by Ian Simpson from Slaughterhouse Studios. Check out their very pretty blog, and follow them on twitter.

Ian has worked in the industry, in one shape or another, for 21 years. It has taken him around the globe, allowed him to work with some amazing people, become inspired by the little observations in life.

“Working in analogue photography all these years until having my hand forced into digital has made be believe that digital photography has done more good for not so good photographers and nothing at all for very good photographers.”

SHOW & TELL:

If you were lucky enough to take advantage of the early Winter weather, bring along some of your favourite snaps and show us your handywork. We’re not looking for technical skill or expensive equipment – just let us see something you’re proud of; you may well be just the inspiration that someone else is looking for! You can add your photos to the Flickr Group before the meet.

If you are coming to this meeting, please leave a comment!

February (Thursday 10th)

  • Talk: DIY Photo Studio
  • Show-&-Tell: “Photo Hack”

March (Thursday 10th)

  • Talk: Gig Photography
  • Show-&-Tell: “Wet”

Last week the third Undiscovered meeting was held having the theme of self-portrait.
Everybody agreed that the tricky thing about self-portraits is first finding out what of ourselves we want to actually show. See the results on :
www.flickr.com/groups/madlabundiscovered/pool/ .

Graham shared his secret for a good self-portrait : using a width angle, take a picture during the golden hour.
Me!

This meeting the subject is portrait of someone or something personal and close. Can be a person, an object, a place …
