Manchester Raspberry Jam

Title: Manchester Raspberry Jam 5
Location: MadLab
Description: The Raspberry Pi is a credit card sized computer with an ARM chip that runs Linux and you can buy one for about £30. It’s designed to bring the hype of BBC Basic back in to schools – you just plug one in to a TV or monitor, attach a keyboard and mouse, and start programming!
Date: 20-10-2012
Start Time: 10:00
End Time: 15:00
Register: This event has has passed. The upcoming event can be found here

This event is suitable for anyone – professional or novice, adult or child – you don’t need any prior knowledge or experience.

The format of the event is simply hacking on whatever you want – get together with someone and see what you can make the Pi do. Some people make games with Scratch, others spend time learning Python, some play with the GPIO pins and external hardware, others teach or help people get started. Apart from an introductory presentation by the organiser, there is very little schedule to the day. However we encourage people to speak up if they have something they want help with so that everyone gets something out of the day. All day long demos will be going on which amaze the group.

Whether you’re a beginner or an expert you’ll have a blast playing with this incredible single board computer.

What you’ll need:
- Bring a Pi if you have one, but it’s not essential everyone does
- Bring as many connectivity cables as you can, as well as mice/keyboards and usb hubs – these all come in handy!
- If convenient (i.e. you live close or drive) do bring a monitor so more many people can get on at once

We provide food (in the form of pizza) and drink as this is an all day event – this is kindly provided by our sponsors. If you would like to help with sponsorship please donate on the tickets page or get in touch

Talks and demos are welcomed and encouraged.

The format of the event will be in the style of an ‘unconference’ – with talks, demos, tutorials and workshops going on throughout the day – put on by willing participants – and everyone has the freedom to attend the sessions or simply plug in their Pi and have a play with it or group up with others and share ideas. We’re looking for some sponsorship money from supporters so we can lay on some food for attendees.

Come along to the MadLab for a day playing with your (or somebody else’s) brand new Raspberry Pi! We’ll start with a ‘Getting Started’ session for people to be shown how to get their Pi up and running by mounting a Linux OS on to an SD card and seeing things happen on a TV screen. Following that we’ll have a number of Barcamp-style talks and demos to explore what people are doing with their Pi and to inspire ideas for interesting applications.

What you’ll need

  • If you have a Raspberry Pi, do bring it with you, but it’s not essential as you will be able to watch demos and play with other people’s Pis
  • If you’re bringing a Pi, bring as much useful stuff as you can – USB keyboard, mouse, HDMI (or other) cable, SD card(s), power cable, network cable, etc
  • If you feel like giving a talk or demo, prepare something and we’d love to see what you have to show

The event will be free but donations to the MadLab will be gratefully accepted!
