The Ghosts of St. Paul’s upcoming events

Tuesday, March 19th, 2013

Some of you might remember ‘Engels Night‘ held on 18th December last year, where tour guide Jonathan Schofield led a group of intrepid historians through Manchester, highlighting connections with the seedy and politically radical in the area of Manchester that they know so well. Check out some of the photos.

This event was part of our ongoing local history project, ‘Ghosts of St Paul’s’, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the ‘All Our Stories‘ initiative. The project aims to encourage interest and participation in local history and heritage and consists of a range of events during which we get to find out the untold history of the Northern Quarter.

We have some more exciting events exploring Manchester’s industrial heritage. Below is a list of upcoming events. (more…)

Calling all residents of the Northern Quarter, past and present – we want to hear your stories!

MadLab is taking part in a nationwide Heritage Lottery Fund event, exploring the industrial heritage of the Northern Quarter (formerly St. Paul’s).

If your family has lived in the area at any time from the 19th Century to now, you can contribute to this amazing project.

All contributions are welcome, whether you have memories of shopping trips on Oldham Street or in the market, stories of great-relatives working in the weavers’ cottages or reminiscences of playing along Tib Street.

This is a unique opportunity to preserve local history for generations to come. Your personal memories and stories are very important because they are unlikely to have been documented. Do feel free to bring photographs or memorabilia with you to share with your neighbours.

Come down to MadLab on March 27 for afternoon tea and a trip down memory lane.

Professional audio archivist Amanda Belantara will be at MadLab from 2pm to 5pm to record your words for posterity.

This event is one strand of several activities leading up to a celebration of Northern Quarter heritage – The Ghosts of St Paul’s.

The Ghosts of St Paul’s is a Victorian penny blood dragged screaming back to life in the 21st Century. Inspired not only by the spectacular machinery of the mid-Victorian stage, but by the clandestine technologies of the peep show and backstreet penny gaff theatre, the phantasmagoria and the golden age of stage magic, the imagineers and technologists of MadLab will raise the ghosts of the Northern Quarter to walk the streets again, telling their stories in a vivid and unique after-dark event.

You don’t need to book in advance and can turn up on the afternoon. But if you’d like to know more, please email office@madlab.org.uk

Amanda Belantara is co-founder of art collective Kinokophone.
Kinokophone collects and composes sounds, stories and imagery from around the world. They are an artist collective, producing installations, sound for documentary films, oral history projects and music.

This project is supported by an All Our Stories grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
All Our Stories, a brand-new small grant programme, launched earlier this year in support of BBC Two’s The Great British Story. It has been designed as an opportunity for everyone to get involved in their heritage. With HLF funding and support, community groups will carry out activities that help people explore, share and celebrate their local heritage.
