The Manchester YRS group 2013

Once again, it time for us to host a weeklong event for young people to come together and make apps, websites and programmes out of open data: Young Rewired State.

This summer will be our fourth year as a YRS host centre.  From our band of ten young coders in 2009, we have grown to host over 30 for a week of open data hacking at MadLab.  In fact, this year, we’ve also got centres with the BBC at MediaCity, and at Oldham College.  We anticipate up to 100 young people will take part in YRS around Greater Manchester this summer – that’s 10% of the national figure!

After YRS 2012, we were keen to maintain the momentum we’d created as the largest national centre. So since then we’ve hosted monthly events at MadLab and other venues such as The Sharp Project and Hyper Island, attended by around 40 young people each time. We’ve also supported the growth of Code Clubs in primary schools and other venues in the region.  There’s a growing appetite from young people, parents and business to get involved and learn about coding outside of school.

We consider YRS as the highlight in our annual calendar of events aimed at under 18s. And this year it will be bigger and better than ever!

To help make this happen, we’re asking the wider community for help. There are a number of ways which you can contribute –  we’d be very grateful if you could.

- Mentor

Can you give up some time between 5-9th August to help YRS participants? It could be backend stuff, data wrangling, front end or even user testing? If so, sign up here to register as a mentor. It’s a busy week, as teams prepare their projects for the national Show & Tell in Birmingham…

- Participants

We’ve still spaces at MediaCity and Oldham College.  Do you know anyone under 18 with an interest in coding that might want to take part?

- Sponsors

We can’t do any of this without the generous input from the community.  Cash, food, goodies and kit are always welcome.

YRS is always an amazing week, especially here in Manchester.  Please let us know if you can help! Contact office@madlab.org.uk.

Manchester YRS at the Custard Factory in Birmingham

In early August MadLab hosted Young Rewired State 2012. If you didn’t catch the goings-on on the website, check out what we got up to here. We also captured the week on camera and video – click the link to see all our lovely mugs, captured for posterity.

We kept you up to date with what the YRSers were up to, but there was a veritable army of support from the community and we’d like to take a moment to thank each and every one of them.

Can you help by donating food, prizes – or a laptop?

From the 6th-10th August, MadLab will be hosting YRS Manchester.  We’ve hosted it annually since it started in 2010 and over the years have seen it grow massively.  We were one of just a handful of centres back in those early days – and this year, we’re one of 50 throughout the UK!

Young Rewired State Manchester – 2012

Geek Meets Government

Title: Young Rewired State Manchester – 2012
Location: MadLab
Description: YRS is an annual hack week in August for young developers across the country to go and build visualisations, digital and/or non-digital products using government data, alongside working devs in businesses across the UK.
Start Date: 06-08-2012
End Date: 09-08-2012
Start Time: 10:00
End Time: 16:00

The event in 2012 runs from the 6th to the 12th August. During that week businesses, small and large, around the country act as hosts to local young people, YRS alumni, Rewired State mentors and other volunteers. A challenge is set to build digital products: mobile and web, using at least one piece of open data.

It is free for every child to enter so long as they are aged 18 or under and have a rudimentary understanding of programming — although we do send out free resources in advance of the week for those who are unsure of their skills.

Young Rewired State is an initiative to give developers aged under 18 the chance to meet, share and build applications. MadLab has been the host to the summer YRS in both 2010, and 2011 - here are some photos from YRS 2011. Whatever your level or experience, If you are aged under 18 and into coding, then come and meet like-minds.

There will be plenty of chance to demo projects and share stories – please make sure you let us and your parents know you are coming.
