MadLab may have a reputation for being overly geeky and tech focused, but we are also home to many creative groups (filmmakers, photographers, writers) and two book clubs. The Heritage Lottery Fund for All Our Stories gave us the opportunity to start a new one – around the industrial heritage of Manchester.

In consultation with Jane Mathison of Time to Read North West, we chose Elizabeth Gaskell’s Mary Barton for the inaugural meeting (2nd April) of the Manchester’s Industrial Heritage Reading Group.

We had an interesting mix of attendees, with one very enthusiastic and prepared individual bringing along several historic maps crossing date ranges from 1793, 1845 and 1915.

Take a look at this video of the night to see what happened.

Do you popular demand, we will be discussing Mary Barton again on Thursday, 25th April. The meeting is free to attend, and we welcome anyone to come along.

A surprising and pleasing outcome of the first meeting was to create a google map of geographic interests in the book, and to go on a walking tour of Mary Barton. The date will be announced when we know more!
