Digital Skills for Salford returns in May for the last run of the 2016/17 season. These courses are only available to Salford residents aged 19+.

We have three WordPress based courses to take you from website novice all the way through to blogger extraordinaire.

Dates and times for our Summer schedule;

 Setting up your first WordPress website

10th May, 10am – 3:30pm SOLD OUT

Create your first website using WordPress, learn about the differences between a page and a post, and add your first content. Through the course of the day we will take you through the essential aspects of WordPress. By the end of the day, you’ll have a basic website setup, including some content. You’ll know how to format your content, add images, and we’ll also go over some basic settings.

Suitable for beginners, you do not need any prior experience creating a website, although you will need to be confident using a computer and the internet. 

Making the most of WordPress

Handy tips on how to make the most of your first website, adding custom menus, using widgets, adding plugins and playing with themes. Over the course of the day you’ll be shown how to get more functionality from your basic WordPress website. We’ll go deeper into formatting your content, and introduce you to the joy of widgets to spice up your sidebar, how to create menus, dynamic content, and an introduction to Plugins.

Suitable for people who have completed the ‘Setting up your first website with WordPress’ course, or have a WordPress website with basic content prepared, and understand how to create new pages and posts.

Blogging 101 

10th June, 10am – 3:30pm SOLD OUT

Put your first website to good use and start blogging. Learn how to create engaging content for your readers. Over the course of the day we’ll show you how to create good quality, relevant content for your website. We’ll show you how to use Google Analytics and Google Search Console, and also get you SEO ready with some highly recommended plugins.

Suitable for people who have completed the ‘Making the most of WordPress’ course, or have a WordPress website prepared and be confident with adding content, themes and widgets.

Programming 101

14th June, 10am – 3:30pm or 17th June, 10am – 3:30pm

A whistle-stop tour of everything programming languages can do. A practical session using Python. We’ll be covering data types, inputs and outputs, data structures and loops. You’ll also create your first program! Over the course of the day you’ll be introduced to some fundamental coding concepts, plus we’ll give you advice on how to continue learning how to code at home when you’re done!

Suitable for beginners, you do not need any prior experience with programming, although you will need to be confident using a computer and the internet.

Intro to Web Development

24th June, 10am – 3:30pm

Learn how to make a simple two-page website using HTML and CSS, the building blocks of the web. Over the course of the day you’ll learn how to setup the fundamental building blocks of a web page. We’ll use HTML to provide basic structure and content, and then add in a bit of CSS to style your web pages. We’ll also show you how to carry on learning the skills for web development after the course has ended!

Suitable for beginners, you do not need any prior experience with programming, although you will need to be confident using a computer and the internet.

Booking Fees

All workshops cost £10 per person, or £5 if you are currently unemployed or underemployed. The cost of the course covers your tuition for one day plus any accompanying learning materials. You will need to provide your own lunch.

On the Day

We have a number of Macs and Windows laptops available for you to use, alternatively, you may prefer to bring your own laptop. Tablets are not suitable for these courses.

Refreshments (teas, coffee, water, juice) will be available throughout the day. Please bring your own lunch.

All workshops take place at The Landing, in Media City. Parking can be found close by at The Garage, accessed from Broadway. The venue is fully wheelchair accessible, and disabled parking is also available at The Garage.
