Eco Home Lab

Thursday 11th May, 5:30pm

A hangout for people taking control of their home energy usage and generation. We use open-source hardware and software to gain a better understanding of our homes and how they work – making best use of the energy we generate and reducing the energy we waste. Each month we’ll expand on our understanding and start to integrate the monitors in to different areas of Carbon Co-op’s development. What we talk about:

  • Yay, sensors! – air quality, ventilation flows, dew point, …
  • User interfaces – your smart home on your smart phone
  • Integrating Open Data sources
  • Taking the power back! Making better use of the surplus power we generate
  • Zoning and home automation: “Monitors have only interpreted the home in various ways, the point is to change it.”

And who it’s for:

  • Anyone using OpenEnergyMonitor kit. Come and get help making it work better for you, or share your knowledge and shiny dashboard goodness!
  • Anyone with skills in physical electronics, web development, interface design or programming who wants to use that knowledge to avert this whole climate apocalypse thing.
  • Anyone! There will be open space for groups to focus on adding new sensors or hacking the user interface, and there will always be a ‘newbies’ group for people interested in finding out more.

Come join the energy geek revolution! Go to our Meetup page to RSVP or get more info on upcoming events.

This month we will be getting an update from those involved and looking at ways others can get involved.

[masked]pm – OpenEnergyMonitor drop-in with Trystan Lea one of the projects core developers. Temperature sensor not reporting, dashboard showing unusual results? Bring it down and we’ll see what we can do.

6.30 – 7.15 – Project Updates:

* MyHomeEnergyPlanner – an open source home energy assessment tool

– Current status (Carlos)
– Adding solar batteries (Ben)
– Adding electric vehicles (Trystan/Dom)

* MadLab Monitoring – a project to cover MadLab in energy and environmental sensors (Matt)

* Off-grid holiday cottage project – we have been asked how to reduce energy usage old poorly insulated off-gas-grid holiday cottage in North Yorkshire!?

* emoncms groups/admin module (Carlos/Trystan) – adding super users to the open source emoncms energy monitoring/analysis platform and giving them great power!

7.15-8pm – Working session – a time for planning and doing! Join a project or come up with one of your own with the support of the group.

8pm – Pub!
