Manchester Jewellers Network, ‘Keum Boo’

Tuesday 9th June, 6:30pm

NB: MJN’s meeting this month will be taking place at Sevenoak Studio – 7 Oak Street, M4 5JD (on the corner of Edge Street and Oak Street, opposite Home Sweet Home).

MJN are subsituting their regular meeting at MadLab for an impromptu ‘Keum Boo’ lesson up the road in Sevenoak Studio, taught by master-jeweller Karin Sheldon. Karin will introduce us to this ancient Korean art, which literally translates as ‘attached gold’. Participants will be taught how to prepare the silver, and how to fuse the pure gold sheet to the surface of the silver.

If possible, please bring a burnisher, and a small butane torch if you have one. Karin is generously giving her time for free, but there will be a small charge of £22.50 per person to cover the cost of the sterling silver and 24K gold supplied. Participants can keep the items made during the lesson. This is a two/three hour Keum Boo taster session for current and new MJN members. A full day class will be taught by Karin on 22nd August, also in Sevenoak Studio at a cost of £95 including materials, silver and gold.

Manchester Jewellers Network was established in 2002. Our main aim is to support excellence in our field, exchange ideas and build up a reputation for our work through exhibitions. We are providing a forum for emerging jewellers to develop and show new work and an incentive for established contemporary jewellers to extend their ranges and take on fresh challenges. We intend to set a precedent for the broadening of exhibition venues available to contemporary jewellery and an opportunity for the general public to see innovative work in non-traditional settings.
