Talk: 20 Things I Wish I Knew about being a Developer 20 Years Ago

Ever wish you could go back in time to a younger you and pass on some nuggets of wisdom? Me neither, but if I did then this talk is what it might sound like.

During this talk I’ll be exploring some of the things I’ve learnt over the past 20 years as a professional developer. Is building software a craft or a science (or something else)? What is the purposes of the code we write? Do we even need databases? What should I do if my boss doesn’t value good software practices?

With some trusty memes to guide us, we’ll take a look at what history has through us. It’s like the retrospective at the end of a twenty-year sprint.

About the speaker

As the Co-founder of Createk, John Cleary splits his time between coding, snowboarding and pizza eating. There are an estimated 48 million keyboards in the UK, John owns six of them. One is PS2 and another is missing the ‘K’ key.
