At MadLab we’re passionate about making Science, Technology, Arts and Computing not only fun – but relevant, compelling and exciting – to a broad and rapidly growing spectrum of users. Our expert facilitators can develop workshops for both children and adults, on a range of subjects, and using a variety of technologies, to suit most needs. Unless otherwise specified. computers/laptops are not provided, these would need to be made available by the venue or provided by the learner. We would also require the venue to have open access to free wifi.

Digital Skills

Basic Computer Skills

Setup a Google account, including email, and learn how to write documents, use spreadsheets and find information on the internet. Suitable for complete beginners, our basic computer skills workshop can be tailored to your needs, and accompanying workbook for learners to take home is provided. Running over one or two days, this workshop will give you the confidence to get online.

Introduction to Social Media 

Don’t know your Facebook from your Twitter? Find out how to use social media for networking, communication and job searches, and create your own LinkedIn account. Suitable for learners who already know how to use email and browse online, our social media workshop can be tailored to your needs, and can be especially useful for anyone unemployed and looking for work. Running over one or two days, this workshop will give you the tools to create your online profile.

Learn to Solder

The ‘I Can Solder Badge’ is a basic soldering kit which provides an ideal platform for teaching people how to solder. With a couple of minutes and a deft wave of a soldering iron, you’ll have a flashing badge to wear with pride! Our Learn to Solder workshop is best run as a drop-in session. Each badge takes just 5 – 10 minutes to complete, and our facilitator can instruct up to four people at one time. Suitable for complete beginners, no soldering experience is required.

WordPress

Setting up your first WordPress website

Create your first website using WordPress, learn about the differences between a page and a post, and add your first content. Our basic WordPress course will put in place the foundations for your website and can be tailored to your needs. Suitable for learners who are confident using a computer and the internet, but have no experience of creating websites. Running over two days, an accompanying workbook for learners to take home is provided.

We can also supply a test WordPress website for each learner for an additional £15 per person. Test websites remain active for three months following the course.

Making the most of WordPress

Handy tips on how to make the most of your first website, creating menus, using widgets and playing with themes. Our intermediate WordPress course will help build upon solid foundations and add exciting functionality to your website. We’ll also run through our list of essential Plugins to help get you on your way! Suitable for learners who already have a WordPress.org website set up, and understand how to create basic content. Learn how to create engaging content for your readers, get your content optimized for search engines and learn how to combine your WordPress website with Google Search Console and Analytics. Coding with Arduino

Have a go at coding with electronics in this taster session workshop. Learn to connect & configure the arduino, upload programs, prototype circuits & interact with different components. This workshop will take you through setting up the Arduino, and creating circuits to run example codes. As a final challenge, you can code your own Traffic Light system or Knight Rider scanner!

Get the Bug for Coding with CodeBug

A fun and engaging introduction to easy drag-and-drop programming and electronics. CodeBug is a Manchester-born initiative, designed to give children a fun and engaging introduction to drag and drop programming and electronics. In just a few clicks you’ll program this versatile little computer to display your own message. By the end of the session, you’ll have created a scrolling name badge and a many-faced bug!

Hacking Minecraft on the Raspberry Pi

Explore the virtual world of Minecraft Pi, and use Python to manipulate the world around you. Learn to teleport, set blocks within the Minecraft World, leave a trail of flowers as you walk, blow up huge TNT blocks on command, flow lava, and create your very own ‘whac-a-block’ game!

Programming Scratch on the Raspberry Pi

With Scratch, you can program your own interactive stories, games, and animations — and share your creations with others in the online community. This workshop teaches fundamental coding concepts such as sequencing, repetition, variables, selection and operators.

Science Busking

Our science demonstrations use simple everyday ingredients to conduct experiments that wow! Get hands-on with engineering or messy with physics. With a large range of exercises we can tailor each session to your requirements. Suitable for both drop-in activities and formal learning.
